Arthritis, a form of rheumatic disease, is characterized by inflammation and loss of function in some parts of the body. Fruits, veggies, whole grains along with nuts and seeds are natural inflammation fighters that can also help in controlling your weight. Certain foods are believed to reduce pain and joint inflammation caused due to arthritis.
Adding these foods in your diet can fight inflammation and joint pain-
Vitamin C: Add more of bell peppers, oranges, mangos, pineapples, strawberries and kidney beans on your grocery list. Greater intake of vitamin C can reduce the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis by 30%.
Ginger: It is a well known cure for colds, nausea, migraines and hypertension. But it also helps in reducing inflammation and pain caused by arthritis. To add more ginger to your diet, grate fresh ginger over sautéed vegetables, slice ginger to tea and you can also add it in baked foods.
Fish: Fish oil is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids which block inflammation causing cytokines and turn them into chemicals called Resolvins. It significantly decreases joint tenderness and stiffness. Omega-3 rich fish include salmon, tuna and herring.
Soybean: The heart healthy soybeans are low in fat, high in protein and fiber and are also great for reducing arthritis pain.
Cherries: The anthocyanins present in cherries have an anti-inflammatory effect. The same chemical is also present in other red and purple fruits like strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries.
Dairy Foods: Milk, yogurt and cheese are packed with calcium and vitamin D which helps in increasing bone strength. Vitamin D is also important for calcium absorption and also helps in boosting the immune system. Green, leafy vegetables are also loaded with the same nutrients and can be substituted in place of dairy products.
Turmeric: Traditionally used in Chinese and Indian ayurvedic medicines, turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties and modifies immune system responses. It reduces joint pain and swelling in arthritis patients.
Limit or avoid red meat, saturated fats and sugar to help prevent arthritis and manage arthritis-related inflammation and pain.
